Wayne Rooney believes Manchester United new-boy Robin van Persie is already developing a reputation as the club’s talisman following his impressive start to the season.

The Dutchman sealed a £24m move to Old Trafford from Premier League rivals Arsenal in the summer after spending eight seasons in north London and has already scored 11 goals for the Red Devils.

And Rooney, who helped United to a 3-1 win over Braga to book their place in the Champions League last 16, believes Van Persie will be a key man for Sir Alex Ferguson’s men as they look to win Europe’s top prize this season.

“When you look at all the teams who have won this competition [the Champions League], they all have had those individuals who can do a bit of magic and win the competition,” told the Daily Mirror.

“Robin is like that for us. He’s great for the whole team, he’s our talisman.

“We’ve got as good a chance as anyone. I think we’ve got the players. We’re good as a team, but we’ve also got some great individual players who can win games for us.”
