Chelsea have sacked Roberto Di Matteo just hours after a 3-0 loss to Juventus in the Champions League on Tuesday.

The 42-year-old won the FA Cup and Champions League in a 262-day reign at the Blues, with Rafael Benítez and Harry Redknapp the early frontrunners to take over at Stamford Bridge.

Here is the best of the Twitter reaction from the sporting world.

Dutch legend Ruud Gullit ‏(@GullitR) is upset for his former team-mate: “Oh my god just found out that #robbiedimatteo has been sacked. That hurts me.”

Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand ‏(@rioferdy5) can’t believe the decision: “Wow, Chelsea have sacked their manager!! I’m a bit late I know but it’s a madness. The stability at our club is something our manager rarely gets praise for…don’t underestimate that. #LambChopped”

Sunderland striker Louis Saha (‏@louissaha08) feels Di Matteo deserved more time after the John Terry scandals: “Can’t believe Roberto Di Matteo has been sack after such a good record. Especially when I think he had to cope with Terry scandals. #harsh”

Arsenal legend Ray Parlour (‏@RealRomfordPele) speculates over Di Matteo’s replacement: “Redknapp for Chelsea?”

Former Celtic striker John Hartson (‏@JohnHartson10) jokes under-pressure QPR manager Mark Hughes could replace Di Matteo: “If Mark Hughes got the Chelsea job I think my hair would start growing back!!!!”

England legend Gary Lineker (‏@GaryLineker) puts Di Matteo’s achievements in perspective: “Take over in spring, win FA Cup, win Champions League, lie third and very much in contention in PL after finishing sixth last season. Next?? I’ve no idea who’ll he appoint now. Guess he’ll try for Mourinho or Guardiola in summer with temporary boss like Avram Grant until then #guess!”

Ex-Wimbledon striker Jason Euell (‏@jasoneuell) questions the original decision to appoint him: “Wow Robbie Di Matteo sacked… I don’t think Roman Abramovich wanted him to be the manager in the first place to be honest, but probably thought he had to. Pep?”

England cricket legend and Chelsea fans Alec Stewart ‏(@StewieCricket) is angered by the sacking: “Joke decision to sack Di Matteo. Wins Champs League and FA Cup. Currently third in league. Need stability for sustained success. #nothappy”

Former Bradford manager Chris Kamara (‏@chris_kammy) can’t see Di Matteo’s replacement matching the Italian’s achievements: “Roberto Di Matteo sacked after winning Champions League and FA cup in his first season, The next Chelsea manager has to better that! #nochance”

Stoke goalkeeper Asmir Begovic ‏(@asmir1) says: “Chelsea sack Di Matteo, bit harsh no???? Interesting to see who gets that job.”

Former Norwich star Iwan Roberts (‏@iwanwroberts) is surprised by how fast Chelsea have acted: “Wow Mr Abramovich didn’t waste time in wielding the axe!!Di Matteo sacked by Chelsea after winning champions league and FA cup last season!”

Sunderland’s Michael Gray ‏(@mickygray33) isn’t shocked by the decision: “Di Matteo has been sacked…!!! Surprised yes… Shocked no…”
