Tottenham transfers: AVB plays down Bale link to Real Madrid
Tottenham transfers: Andre Villas-Boas has moved to quash speculation linking winger Gareth Bale with a January exit
Andre Villas-Boas has moved to play down speculation linking Gareth Bale with a move to Real Madrid by insisting it would be nearly “impossible” for the winger to leave the club in January.
Former Tottenham midfielder Luka Modric recently urged the Wales international to consider joining him at the Bernabeu after Villas-Boas admitted Spurs could struggle to keep hold of their prized asset amid interest from a host of Europe’s top clubs.
But the Portuguese coach insists Spurs “are not looking to sell” and took a swipe at Modric over the Croatian’s comments about Bale’s future.
“It is extremely difficult if not impossible,” said Villas-Boas. “Modric is aware of Gareth’s performances because of his love for Tottenham and the fact that he is very connected with him and this whole club.
“The club has to protect our assets regarding our objectives. We have to qualify for the Champions League as Luka says and for that to happen we need the players that can make a difference.
“In the end we are not looking to sell. Modric now needs to worry about getting into the quarter finals of the Champions League and Atletico Madrid this weekend. He should focus more on his club.”
