Arsenal transfers: Wenger ‘likes’ Ba but rules out January swoop
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger all but rules out a January swoop for Newcastle striker Demba Ba
Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has ruled out a January swoop for Newcastle striker Demba Ba.
The Gunners have emerged as one of the Senegal forward’s most likely destinations should he seal a move away from St James’ Park.
Speculation over the 27-year-old’s future has been rife in recent months due to a £7.5m release clause in his contract.
But Wenger has moved to quash reports linking the striker, who has scored 11 Premier League goals this season, with a move to north London.
“I like Demba Ba, yes, but it is not the right place to speak about him because he plays against us tomorrow,” Wenger told a news conference on Friday. “If you ask me ‘do we sign him’, I say no.”
Wenger, whose side host Newcastle on Saturday, also remained coy when quizzed over reports linking Barcelona striker David Villa with a move to Arsenal.
He added: “Any interest we have in any players has to be kept secret at the moment. I cannot come out with any names.”
