Arsenal transfers: Huntelaar ‘close to penning new Schalke deal’
Arsenal transfers: Schalke striker Klass-Jan Huntelaar is reported to be close to signing a new deal at the Bundesliga outfit
Klass-Jan Huntelaar is reportedly close to agreeing a new deal at Schalke amid interest from Arsenal.
The 29-year-old will be available on a free transfer in the summer, with his contract at the Bundesliga outfit set to expire in June.
Arsene Wenger has been heavily linked with a move for the Netherlands international as the Gunners boss looks to add more firepower to his squad.
But Huntelaar’s representative has held meetings with Schalke supervisory board chairman Clemens Tonnies, who says a new deal is close to being agreed.
“I have offered a certain compromise, but I also said Klaas-Jan has to quickly decide in favour of Schalke, otherwise we would do better to end those talks,” said Tonnies.
However, the former Ajax man, who has scored 71 goals in the Bundesliga, remained coy when asked about the negotiations with Schalke over a new deal.
“It is true, Arnold Oosterver [Huntelaar’s agent] was at Veltins-Arena lately,” said Huntelaar.
“An important meeting has taken place. However, I am not able to say more on it right now.”
