Brendan Rodgers has hailed Steven Gerrard as an “incredible example” for his young Liverpool team.

The Reds boss believes the England midfielder, who has made 18 appearances this season, is the perfect role model for the Anfield club’s up-and-coming stars.

Gerrard has created more goal-scoring chances than any other player in the Premier League so far this season, apart from Everton’s Leighton Baines.

And Rodgers has been thrilled with the Liverpool captain’s input since taking over from Kenny Dalglish in the summer.

“He has been brilliant, I have to say,” Rodgers was quoted as saying by the Daily Mirror. “He’s done terrific for us with the younger players, by taking on even more responsibility than he has always done.

“This is a much younger group, and they are still learning, and I think that is one of the biggest things in our progress this year, that the youngsters are able to look up to Steven and learn from his incredible example.

“I think there is probably a bit more responsibility on him, in relation to looking out more for the team, and I am so happy to have someone like that in the group because he is a phenomenal player and a great presence for us.”
