Chelsea 8 Aston Villa 0: Rafael Benítez thrilled with Blues’ progress
Chelsea 8 Aston Villa 0: Rafael Benítez hailed his side's display after they hit eight past a sorry Villa at Stamford Bridge
Rafael Benítez admitted his delight at Chelsea’s “progress” since he took charge at Stamford Bridge after the Blues thrashed a poor Aston Villa on Sunday.
Fernando Torres got the Blues under way after just three minutes, before David Luiz’s brilliant free-kick doubled their advantage.
Branislav Ivanovic and Frank Lampard then made it four, with Ramires adding brace, Oscar netting a penalty and Eden Hazard rounding off the scoring.
The victory moves Chelsea back into third place in the Premier League table, 11 points behind leaders Manchester United, who earlier drew 1-1 at Swansea City.
“To win is always special, but the main thing for me is to see the team progress and improve,” said the Chelsea interim boss. “In every training session we try to adjust little things and at the moment it’s very positive.
“The main thing is to win our games; you can do it if you see the team improving. With this kind of performance you can normally win games. You could see the mentality of the players, even at 6-0 we were pushing and trying to score more.
“The team are attacking as a whole and not just depending on one or two players, which is good news. Hopefully we can keep this momentum.”
Meanwhile, Villa boss Paul Lambert made no excuses for his side’s limp display, with the Birmingham outfit only three points above the relegation zone in 16th place.
“You don’t need to be Einstsein to work out what went wrong,” he said. “We’ve been on a good run of late but I’m not going to make excuses, we’ve been well beaten.
“Credit to Chelsea, they were exceptional. We’re a young side, and sometimes you learn more about your players from a defeat.”
