David Moyes reflected on a “hard-fought” win after watching his Everton side battle to victory over Wigan Athletic to stretch their unbeaten run.

Leon Osman gave the Toffees the lead in the 52nd minute after his shot deflected into the net off Gary Caldwell’s arm.

Phil Jagielka then doubled the home side’s advantage when he headed home Phil Neville’s cross.

Arouna Kone managed to scramble home a goal for Wigan in the 82nd minute but Everton clung on to keep intact their unbeaten run that has stood since September.

Moyes’s side are in fifth place in the Premier League table, level on points with Tottenham after Spurs’ 4-0 victory at Aston Villa.

And the Everton boss was relieved the Toffees were able to hold on for victory despite a tense finale at Goodison Park.

“It was a hard-fought win,” Moyes told BBC Sport. “I like the way Wigan play, they have a lot of the ball and when you have your chances you have to make the most of them and fortunately we did that.

“We have played well this season but I knew this would be tough. There will be a lot of teams who have problems against Wigan.

“I was happy when we got the first. I never really felt that secure and we gave a goal away which made it a bit rocky towards the end, but we got the three points.”
