India v England: Jonny Bairstow is set to miss the one-day international series in January, with Joe Root replacing him

Jonny Bairstow will miss England’s one-day international series against India in January due to a family illness.

The 23-year-old is expected to return to the squad for the T20 and ODI tour of New Zealand beginning in late January.

The Yorkshire batsmen flew home early from the pre-Christmas leg of the tour to return to his family in light of the news.

Joe Root, who made his T20 debut in Bairstow’s absence, and will replace him for the five match series starting on January 11 in Rajkot.
