Roberto Mancini has claimed his Manchester City side are still “much better” than Manchester United despite Sunday’s derby defeat by Sir Alex Ferguson’s men.

City now lie six points behind Premier League leaders United following that loss, which came after the Citizens were dumped out of the Champions League at the group stage.

But Mancini is convinced the defending champions can claw back some of the six-point gap to United at the top of the table.

“Things aren’t going well but I know we will still have a great year,” Mancini said.

“United have more experience but we have a much better team and play much better football. Six points is not a big difference with 24 games still to play.

“We need to try to win five or six games in a row to try and reduce the gap.”

The Italian, who believes his side were “unlucky” to have lost Sunday’s clash, is certain the champions will still challenge United for the title despite the sizeable gap to the Red Devils.

“Even though we lost on Sunday, we showed that we are a really strong team and can win the title again,” he continued.

“We were unlucky. We dominated long spells of that game — and did not deserve to lose.”

He added: “The Premier League is the best campaign in the world at the moment and as we know from winning last year, you can lose a game in the last second.”
