Wayne Rooney says Manchester United are confident of beating Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday.

The Red Devils moved three points clear of the defending Premier League champions courtesy of an entertaining 4-3 victory over Reading at the Madekski last weekend.

Roberto Mancini’s men beat the Red Devils at Eastlands and Old Trafford last term and the Citizens are unbeaten in the top flight this season.

But despite recent history, Rooney is confident Sir Alex Ferguson’s side can get three points at City and put themselves in pole position to win a 14th Premier League title.

“It’s a massive game [on Sunday] and it was nice to get the win at Reading – we can go into the game knowing we are three points above City,” Rooney told United’s website.

“It gives us that extra belief and confidence to go there and try and get the three points.”

Rooney also refused to rule Chelsea out of contention, although the England international does suspect the title race will eventually be fought between City and United.

“It looks like it is starting to go that way [being a two-horse race], but this is a crazy league and anything can happen,” he added.

“We saw Chelsea at the top for the first eight or nine games and we were five or six points behind then, so you have to stay focused for all of the games and try to stay near the top of the league.”
