Harry Redknapp insisted Queens Park Rangers will have to strengthen their squad in January after Shola Ameobi netted Newcastle United’s winner at St James’ Park.

The 31-year-old came on as a second-half substitute and netted in the 81st minute to end Newcastle’s seven-game unbeaten run.

Alejandro Faurlin and Djibril Cisse both came close for the visitors, but Redknapp’s men succumbed to their first loss under the new manager, leaving them five points from safety.

“We will try to improve in the window to give ourselves half a chance. We need one or two extra options, like Newcastle had today,” Redknapp told BBC Sport.

“They could bring a couple of forwards on to freshen it up but we couldn’t do that. We are desperately short of one or two bodies.”

Meanwhile Newcastle’s match-winner Ameobi revelled in his late winner to give the Magpies a much-needed three points.

“It was great to score the winning strike,” said Ameobi.

“The finish was something I have been working on. I practised it before the match and it paid off for me.”
