Newcastle boss Alan Pardew unafraid to drop misfiring Papiss Cisse
Newcastle manager Alan Pardew admits he may drop misfiring striker Papiss Cisse in favour of Shola Ameobi
Alan Pardew has hinted he may drop Newcastle United’s misfiring striker Papiss Cisse if the Senegal international’s goal drought continues.
Cisse has struggled to find any consistent form this season after netting just two Premier League goals in 14 appearances.
Newcastle face Queens Park Rangers at St James’ Park on Saturday, with the Magpies just two points ahead of 18th-placed Wigan Athletic.
With Cisse struggling, Pardew says he may be forced to drop the Senegal international and give Shola Ameobi a chance alongside Demba Ba.
“It’s natural for pressure to be applied when you have one striker scoring and one not scoring,” Pardew told the Shields Gazette.
“We’re having to work our way through it – that’s what we’ll try to do.
“Sometimes with players you need to show loyalty, and sometimes you need to show faith. I’ll always do that with my strikers.
“But there does come a point when I have to say ‘OK, let’s try something new’.
“Shola [Ameobi] is knocking on the door at the minute.
“He wants to have a go, and that’s something I’ll need to look closely at over the next couple of games.”
