Alan Pardew says he has been heartened by his Newcastle United side’s improved performances in recent weeks as the Magpies gear up for a testing run of festive fixtures.

The Magpies travel to Premier League leaders Manchester United on Boxing Day following their 1-0 victory over Queens Park Rangers at St James’ Park on Saturday.

That victory was only Newcastle’s second in nine Premier League outings but Pardew believes his side are showing signs of improvement ahead of their clash at Old Trafford, which is followed by a trip to Arsenal and a home match against Everton.

Pardew, whose side are 14th in the Premier League table, said: “When you looked at the programme at the start, you could see that this was a tough run for us, and it’s even tougher now with the results we have had and the injuries we have sustained.

“But I am actually going into it more buoyed than I have been at probably any other period of the season.

“We have definitely picked up, we look a little bit more resilient. We got a very important clean sheet on Saturday and I think we will be in good heart for what is one of the toughest games of the programme, Manchester United away.”
