QPR receive boost after Adel Taarabt omitted from Morocco squad
QPR's Harry Redknapp gets a late Christmas present as Adel Taarabt omitted from Morocco squad for African Cup of Nations
Harry Redknapp has been handed a late Christmas present after Queens Park Rangers playmaker Adel Taarabt was omitted from Morocco’s squad for the African Cup of Nations.
The 23-year-old had spoken of his desire to represent his country at the tournament after missing out on a place in the squad for the 2010 edition.
Taarabt has been one of QPR’s top performers this season, scoring four goals in 15 appearances, including a brace against Fulham in their only Premier League victory to date.
However, Morocco head coach Rachid Taoussi has not named the former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder in his 24-man squad, but Aston Villa’s Karim El Ahmadi and Liverpool winger Oussama Assaidi are included.
QPR’s head of communications Ian Taylor broke the news on his Twitter page after the squad sheet was released earlier this morning.
“R’s fans – you sang you wanted him to stay at Loftus Road, and it appears he is,” said Taylor on the social media site.
“Whatever language you read it in, Taarabt is NOT in the Morocco squad for the Cup of Nations.”
Taarabt last week reiterated his desire to play for Morocco at the tournament.
“I hope to be at the African Nations Cup but even if I’m not there, and that would be painful, I will be the biggest Morocco supporter,” he said.
