Theo Walcott scored a hat-trick as Arsenal were emphatic 7-3 winners against Newcastle United at The Emirates on Saturday.

Elsewhere, both Manchester clubs picked up victories over Norwich City and West Bromwich Albion, while Wigan Athletic were 3-0 winners against Aston Villa.

Here’s the best of the Twitter reaction from the professionals after an action-packed day of top-flight football.

Injured Tottenham defender Benoit Assou-Ekotto ‏(@AssouEkotto) enjoyed watching Spurs: “Football is not my passion!!! But to watch the best league in the world about ALL afternoon is really not a problem ;-)!”

Spurs goalkeeper Brad Friedel (‏@friedel_b) is delighted with three points: “What a win!!! Let’s get some other results going our way now.”

City striker Sergio Aguero ‏(@aguerosergiokun) is happy to finish the year on a high: “It’s great to see the year off with a win – sets us up nicely for 2013. We have what it takes and we won’t give up. Goals came back to us today and it matters. We have a great team and make no mistake – we’ll proudly defend our title.”

Citizens captain Vincent Kompany ‏(@VincentKompany) is similarly ecstatic to win a topsy turvy game: “Wowzers! What a game! Unlucky with some of the decisions but this game was everything the Premier League is about. Great game! #MCFC”

United defender Rio Ferdinand (‏@rioferdy5) praises Robin van Persie: “Good result today, RVP with a great strike to finish it off! Roll on for Wigan!”

Former Aston Villa midfielder George Boateng ‏(@george1boateng) is lost for words: “What can I say about the #AVFC result today, it’s easy to criticise but I would like to know what went wrong again today…..?”

Ex-Villa star Ian Taylor (‏@IanTaylor7) gives Boatang the low down: “Still thinking about that performance……We need a spine to the team, an experienced one. Nowhere near good enough…. #avfc 0 #wigan 3!”

Swansea’s Wayne Routledge ‏(@WayneRoutledge) will take three points at Fulham: “Happy as to get three points today, not the most attractive football today but we dug in a held out. Proud of the boys! Safe trip home!”

Stoke defender Robert Huth ‏(@robert_huth) is glad to steal a point from the Saints: “One to forget! Great effort 2nd half!!! Supporters were fooking awesome.”

England legend Gary Lineker (‏@GaryLineker) is impressed by Theo Walcott: “Classy finish from Walcott. Could be a striker in there somewhere!”

Arsenal legend Ian Wright (‏@IanWright0) is glad to see Walcott in a central role: “I’ve only been saying it for five years to play Theo through the centre, Wenger. #HELLO!”

Former Liverpool star Dietmar Hamann ‏(@DietmarHamann ) reckons Arsenal need a new midfielder: “Arsenal need to get a central midfielder if Diaby is out for much longer .. Back four get as much protection as Wenger gets off @piersmorgan!”

Ryder Cup star Ian Poulter (‏@IanJamesPoulter) is frustrated with Arsenal: “This Arsenal game is a joke. What are Arsenal doing. Gibbs that was pathetic.”

Finally, Joey Barton ‏(@Joey7Barton) reckons his old boss won’t be happy: “Great game to watch that. Usually well organised Newcastle. Thats 11 goals in 2 games against. Pardew won’t be happy…”
