Tito Vilanova is to undergo surgery to remove a tumour on Thursday followed by chemotherapy and radiotherapy over the next six weeks.

The 44-year-old, who replaced Pep Guardiola in the summer, underwent an operation to remove a cancerous tumour from his parotid gland, the largest human salivary gland, in November 2011 but has suffered a relapse.

The world of football immediately united in support of the Barça boss on Twitter.

Manchester City midfielder David Silva (‏@21LVA) leads the well-wishers: “All my support and best wishes to Tito and all of the people in the world fighting every day against cancer. Be strong #AnimoTito!”

Silva’s team-mate Sergio Aguero (‏@aguerosergiokun) adds: “We support you, #AnimoTito! We wish you the strength to overcome this moment.”

Sahin’s Reds colleague Suso (@suso30fernandez) hopes to see Vilanova back at Barcelona: “Courage to Tito Vilanova. I hope that the operation will be perfect and be back again with the team as soon as possible. Good luck.”

Former Barcelona striker Gary Lineker (‏@GaryLineker) is thinking of the coach: “Very sorry to hear Tito Vilanova, the Barca coach, is undergoing surgery after a cancer relapse. Thoughts are with him.”

Tennis star and Real Madrid fan Rafael Nadal (‏@RafaelNadal): “All my strength and support to Tito Vilanova! We are all with you to overcome this new step. # ÀnimsTito”

Former Middlesbrough midfielder Gaizka Mendieta (@GaizkaMendieta6) is saddened by the news: “Very sorry to hear the news about Tito Vila. Thoughts are with him and his family. #AnimsTito”

AC Milan director Umberto Gandini (‏@UmbertoGandini) hopes Vilanova is the winner: “All the best to Tito Vilanova, wishing you another win over evil! #AnimsTito”

Chelsea interim manager Rafael Benitez (‏@rafabenitezweb) posts via his website: “Our thoughts are with Tito Vilanova!”
