Sir Alex Ferguson has backed Rafael to keep Cristiano Ronaldo quiet when Manchester United take on Real Madrid in the Champions League last 16.

Ronaldo is set to be reunited with his former employers after the two European heavyweights were pitted together in last week’s draw.

Ferguson believes United have the advantage of knowing Ronaldo’s game inside-out, and claims full-back Rafael is more than capable of keeping the Ballon d’Or nominee in check next year.

“Their best player is the one we know about and that’s an advantage to us,” said Ferguson. “We know everything he can do in a game, but Rafa’s had a fantastic season for us.

“He’s quick and he’s aggressive and my faith would be in him to do the job.”

Ronaldo, who left Manchester United in the summer of 2009, has netted 23 goals in 26 games for Real Madrid so far this season.
