Martin O’Neill has underlined his desire to keep hold of Sunderland striker Fraizer Campbell amid interest from Championship outfit Hull City.

The 25-year-old netted a consolation strike for the Black Cats in a 3-1 defeat by Manchester United at Old Trafford on Saturday, the former England Under-21 international’s first Premier League goal in eight appearances this season.

Hull manager Steve Bruce revealed his interest in signing Campbell after bringing the striker to the Stadium of Light during his reign at the club.

“I like Fraizer both as a player and a boy. If anything was possible, we’d certainly look at it,” said Bruce.

But O’Neill, who replaced Bruce at Sunderland in 2011, wants to keep Campbell to provide competition for Scotland international Steven Fletcher.

“Fraizer did really fine for us against United,” said O’Neill. “We will need him around here between now and New Year for a start.

“I would say we want to try to strengthen the squad if at all possible rather than let players go.”
