Martin O’Neill has revealed that he hopes to keep Tottenham Hotspur defender Danny Rose at Sunderland for the remainder of the season.

The England Under-21 international moved to the Stadium of Light on a season-long loan from Spurs and has made 15 appearances for Sunderland this term, becoming a key member of O’Neill’s first-team.

The north London outfit are set to welcome Benoît Assou-Ekotto back into the fold after a spell on the sidelines, and the Black Cats manager is hoping the youngster will be allowed to remain at Sunderland until the summer.

“Spurs are up here this weekend and there might be a chance for some talks or at least a conversation. Danny’s enjoying it immensely here and he wants to stay,” said O’Neill.

“Spurs are pretty pleased with his progress and the fact that he’s playing regular football.

“But at this moment, we just have to play it by ear and enjoy having him here at Sunderland while it lasts.”
