Sunderland transfers: Celtic manager Neil Lennon urges striker Gary Hooper to pen a new deal at the SPL outfit
Neil Lennon is hopeful Celtic striker Gary Hooper will agree a new deal at the SPL champions amid interest from Sunderland.
The 24-year-old scored in the Hoops’ 2-1 victory over Spartak Moscow on Wednesday night which booked their place in the Champions League last-16 draw in a fortnight.
Hooper, who came through Tottenham Hotspur’s youth system, has been linked with a switch to Martin O’Neill’s misfiring Black Cats side.
But Lennon urged the former Scunthorpe United striker, as well as reported Manchester United target Victor Wanyama, to stay at the Glasgow outfit with a second-round European tie on the horizon.
“Why would they want to leave now when they have got something special to look forward to?” Lennon told STV. “Not many clubs can offer that.
“Gary’s representatives are coming up over the weekend. We’re hoping we can finally get something done on a positive note. Hopefully. There is no guarantee.”
