Tottenham transfers: Brad Friedel signs a new deal which will see the veteran goalkeeper stay at Spurs until 2014
Brad Friedel has penned a new deal to keep the American goalkeeper at Tottenham Hotspur until 2014.
The 41-year-old has made 49 appearances for the White Hart Lane outfit after joining on a free transfer from Aston Villa in 2011.
Spurs manager Andre Villas-Boas snapped up Hugo Lloris in an £8m deal from Lyon in the summer and the France international has become Tottenham’s first-choice goalkeeper.
But Villas-Boas emphasised his desire to keep hold of the American shot-stopper earlier this month amid reported interest from Blackburn Rovers.
“We are trying to hold on to our best assets and Brad is certainly one of them,” said Villas-Boas.
“Brad has been excellent. I spoke to him and he has been such an important player for us. Rotation has not been because of performances.
“Both goalkeepers’ performances have been excellent. It gives me the ability at any time to throw a different keeper into the game.”
Friedel is the only player in Premier League history to have made in excess of 300 consecutive league starts, reaching 310 in total.
