The England striker, on a season-long loan at the Hammers, picked up a knee injury in the east London outfit’s 2-1 loss to Manchester United last week.

In October, Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers ruled out a possible recall for the club’s record £35m signing despite a shortage of strikers at Anfield.

And Allardyce says Carroll will be staying at West Ham as the former Newcastle United star recovers from the setback.

“It’s pretty severe. We didn’t expect it to be quite as severe,” Allardyce told BBC Sport.

“It’s going to be about six to eight weeks. It’s a blow for us and Andy.

“Andy will be staying with us. We have contacted Liverpool, they have all the information, they sent a representative down to assess him, but they use the same specialist as we do, which helps and hopefully he can now recover as quickly as possible.”

Carroll scored his first goal for West Ham in a 3-1 loss to Tottenham after recovering from a hamstring problem which already ruled him out for a month
this season.
