Arsene Wenger admits Arsenal are not close to signing any new recruits before the close of the transfer window next week.

The Gunners are yet to bring in any reinforcements this month despite being linked with a number of players, including Barcelona striker David Villa and Atletico Madrid forward Adrián.

Wenger was quizzed over his transfer plans after watching his side win 3-2 at Brighton and Hove Albion in the fourth round of the FA Cup.

But the Frenchman revealed that there are currently no deals in the pipeline.

“I cannot tell you that,” said Wenger when asked if he was confident of signing a midfielder this month.

“In this kind of job it is realism that is important. Realistically I cannot tell you I will sign anyone tomorrow, or Tuesday, as we are not close to doing it.”
