Aston Villa 1 Newcastle 2: Alan Pardew heaps praise on new signing Moussa Sissoko after the Magpies win at Villa Park
Alan Pardew heaped praise on Newcastle United new boy Moussa Sissoko for a magnificent display after the Magpies edged to victory over fellow strugglers Aston Villa.
Papiss Cisse fired the visitors ahead in the 18th minute after a superb through ball by new arrival Sissoko, before Yohan Cabaye scored a spectacular second on the half-hour mark.
Villa did improve in the second half and Christian Benteke scored from the penalty spot in the 49th minute, but the Magpies held on for a valuable three points.
“There has been a lot of work and effort to get that win,” said Pardew.
“From the players to the chairman to get the new players in. First half we were magnificent, second half the French lads ran out of legs but we hung on.
“We know what we have been missing. Moussa Sissoko was magnificent and he will be a powerful player in the Premier League.
“The new guys were great but the established players here have played their part and helped them settle in.
“Villa have no problem. They will be safe, they have quality.”
Under-fire Villa manager Paul Lambert vowed his side would keep fighting to move clear of the relegation zone, with the Birmingham outfit dropping into the bottom three after Wigan’s draw with Stoke City.
“There will be a few teams down there and we will have to fight our way out of it,” said Lambert.
And on potential transfers, Lambert added: “Money dictates everything and the situation hasn’t changed.
“I don’t know if we will be able to bring anyone in, let’s see what the next two days brings. You have to survive in the league and sometimes you need a bit of help.”
