Rafael Benítez has singled out Arsene Wenger for special praise ahead of Chelsea’s clash with Arsenal at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.

Wenger’s position at Emirates Stadium has come under some scrutiny in recent seasons as a result of the Gunners’ failure to win a major trophy since their FA Cup triumph in 2005.

But Benítez spoke glowingly of his Arsenal counterpart at a news conference to preview Sunday’s clash, insisting that the Frenchman “deserves a lot of credit”.

“I have a good relationship with him,” said the Chelsea interim boss. “He’s one of the best, if not the best, manager to manage in England for many years.

“His ideas and the way they do things is a very good way. He has won a lot and that’s the reason why.

“Each manager and each situation is different. When he first arrived they did well, the style of football was good and the fans were happy.

“Now, some people talk about them not winning trophies, but he’s a great manager with great experience, and he deserves a lot of credit.”

The Blues welcome the Gunners to west London as they look to keep alive their faint hopes of challenging for the Premier League title this season.

Arsenal are currently in sixth place in the table, six points adrift of Benitez’s third-placed Chelsea.
