Lionel Messi has still not satisfied his hunger for the Ballon d’Or.

After collecting the trophy for a record fourth successive time this week, the Barcelona star has declared that he wants to keep on winning the award, which recognises him as the best footballer on the planet.

He said: “I want to win the trophy even more times, but it’s not an obsession. Well, at least not for now. I want to enjoy the present. We will see what happens in a few months’ time.”

But despite his satisfaction at winning the award, Messi admitted that he prefers winning trophies with his team than individual accolades.

“I have said many times that there is nothing like winning trophies with your team,” he continued.

“Individual awards don’t give you the same adrenaline rush. I’m happy to win individual awards, but you cannot compare it with winning a final, lifting a cup and sharing the moment with your team-mates.

“There is nothing like it. It’s the most beautiful thing you can experience as a footballer.

“When I close my eyes and think about my career, the first thing that comes into my head is the night of our victory in Rome against Manchester United.

“I think about my headed goal and how happy the team were after the final whistle. Everything else, like the goals record, is good, but I don’t dream about that.”

Messi also described his reaction each of the four times he won the Ballon d’Or.

“The first time in Paris was unique because it was the first time, and I was surrounded by my family,” he said.

“I didn’t expect to win it the second time at all, it was a real shock. When I won it the third time I drew level with Platini and Cruyff (and Van Basten) and that made me very proud.

“But with this one I have overtaken them. Every award is important, but each award is different.”

And on his challenges for the future, Messi said all he was concerned with was not losing sight of his goals for the season, but recognised it would be difficult to beat his goals record for 2012 in 2013.

“It’s always difficult to beat records and I’m not going to score 91 goals every year,” he admitted.

Messi also apologised for not mentioning Tito Vilanova, Eric Abidal or Cristiano Ronaldo in his acceptance speech in Zürich.

“I’m sorry. I didn’t say everything I wanted to say. I had nothing prepared, no little notes, but I didn’t want to forget anyone. Especially not Tito or Abi.

“I also should have congratulated Cristiano. But the same thing happens every time, I get overcome with emotion and I forget what I wanted to say.”
