Brendan Rodgers has urged Daniel Sturridge to seize his “chance at a big club” after completing a switch from Chelsea to Liverpool.

The Reds are believed to have splashed out around £12m on the England international in a bid to add more firepower to their squad.

The 23-year-old has already spoken of his excitement at being part of the latest revolution at Anfield, and Rodgers is hoping the striker can deliver for Liverpool.

“I have known Daniel since he was 12 at Coventry and then coming through the ranks at Man City. He can score, he has pace and power,” Rodgers told BBC Sport.

“He is also hungry and what we need at Liverpool is players hungry to do well. He recognises this might be his chance at a big club and he has to produce. I am looking forward to working with him.”

Rodgers, whose side were comfortable 3-0 winners against Sunderland at Anfield on Wednesday, also confirmed that Joe Cole is in talks with West Ham United about a possible move.

“I spoke to Joe earlier. He is a really good lad and has been brilliant during my time here in terms of as a human being,” added Rodgers.

“He is obviously speaking with West Ham at the moment and if they can get something organised it will be a terrific move for Joe.”
