Joe Allen admits the whole Liverpool squad were “completely devastated” after the Reds were dumped out of the FA Cup by League One Oldham Athletic on Sunday.

Luis Suárez cancelled out Matt Smith’s opener but the Oldham striker added a second after Brad Jones’s error. And Reece Wabara extended the hosts’ lead before Allen netted a consolation for the Premier League outfit.

The fourth-round defeat marked the first time that Liverpool had lost an away FA Cup tie to a team more than one division below them – and Allen admits he and his team-mates were distraught by the result.

“Everyone in the dressing room is completely devastated,” Allen told the Liverpool Echo.

“It’s the worst feeling in football. To concede three goals in the manner we did was bitterly disappointing. We wanted to do well in the FA Cup but now we’re out.

“I don’t think we underestimated them. But, no disrespect to Oldham, when you’ve been knocked out by a team in League One then something has definitely gone wrong somewhere.

“It hurts and I feel sorry for the fans. When you are representing Liverpool, you represent them.”
