Daniel Sturridge could not hide his excitement after completing his move from Chelsea to Liverpool on the second day of the January transfer window, labelling the Reds a “one of the biggest clubs in the world”.

Sturridge, who had been heavily linked with a move to Anfield after seeing his first-team opportunities at Stamford Bridge limited this season, signed for the Merseysiders on Wednesday in a deal believed to be worth around £12m.

Sturridge said: “It’s a humongous club – for me, one of the biggest in the world – and to have the fans and world-class players we have here is amazing.”

The 23-year-old, who netted 24 goals for the Blues, spent three-and-a-half years at Chelsea, starting 49 games and making 47 appearances as a substitute.

And the England international insisted he is at Anfield for the long-haul after being impressed by Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers’ project on Merseyside.

“He [Rodgers] said he sees me here for a long time – and I also see myself here for a long time, too,” he continued. “I’ve not signed here to play for a couple of years and then move on. I’ve signed to be here for as long as possible.”

Sturridge added: “I’m hugely excited. I just can’t wait for the games to start rolling on. I’ve not played for a while – I’ve had a couple of injuries over the last few months – but I’m just happy now to join such a great club, to be part of a revolution and to be part of something new and something special.

“Hopefully we’ll be able to bring a bit of success for the fans.”

Liverpool managing director Ian Ayre said: “I think he fits all the profile of everything we’ve talked about in the past – a young player, a prolific talent and a prolific goal-scorer in the position he plays in.

“It’s another great example of people showing their faith in the investment we’re making and the project that Brendan is undergoing.”

A statement on Chelsea’s website read: “Chelsea Football Club thanks Daniel for his part in the very successful seasons we enjoyed during his time with us. And we wish him all the best for the future.”

Liverpool take on Sunderland at Anfield in the Premier League on Wednesday night.
