Paul Scholes has declared that Manchester United’s clashes with Liverpool are the “biggest games” ahead of their showdown at Old Trafford on Saturday.

United’s derby rivals Manchester City have emerged as a force to be reckoned with in recent seasons, with the Citizens pipping the Red Devils to the Premier League title last term on goal difference.

Liverpool, meanwhile, have failed to mount a title challenge for some years, but Scholes still rates his side’s clashes with the Reds as their toughest contest – despite their recent struggles.

“Liverpool probably haven’t done as well as they’d have liked over the last few years and they’d probably admit that,” Scholes said.

“Liverpool historically are our biggest rivals, they’re always the biggest games and the best atmospheres. But I’m sure City will run them close.”

Eighth-placed Liverpool are currently 21 points behind leaders Manchester United in the Premier League table.
