Manchester United's Robin van Persie praises Danny Welbeck after the striker's "brilliant" display in a win against Liverpool

Robin van Persie has heaped praise on Manchester United striker Danny Welbeck after the Red Devils sealed a 2-1 victory over bitter rivals Liverpool at Old Trafford on Sunday.
The Netherlands international has started alongside Javier Hernández or Wayne Rooney for most of the season, with Welbeck being utilised as an impact substitute by Sir Alex Ferguson.
However, Van Persie enjoyed combining with the 22-year-old against Liverpool, with Welbeck having a role in both of United’s goals.
The England striker was part of the build-up play that led to Van Persie’s opener before winning the free-kick which allowed the former Arsenal captain to tee up Nemanja Vidic.
“He [Welbeck] played really well,” Van Persie told United’s website.
“I think he was good in the combinations and played a big part in the build-up to the first goal, passing and moving to make space.
“A couple of times he got the ball when they made a mistake. I got it one or two times when they misplaced the ball.
“He has been brilliant. He is still young and has been really good in training, working his socks off. He is a very positive guy who wants and loves to play football. He did really well.”
