Roberto Mancini’s Manchester City kept up the pressure on title rivals Manchester United with a 3-0 victory over Stoke City at the Etihad Stadium on New Year’s Day.

Sir Alex Ferguson’s United were 4-0 winners at Wigan Athletic, while Aaron Lennon inspired Tottenham Hotspur to a 3-1 victory over Reading.

Here is the best of the Twitter reaction from the professionals on Tuesday.

Tottenham winger Aaron Lennon ‏(@Aaron7Lennon) is delighted to inspire his side to a perfect start to 2013: “Great way to start the new year by the boys #buzzing so much keep the lane rocking for us it helps so much!!! #coys”

City striker Sergio Aguero (‏@aguerosergiokun) scores again but picks up a hamstring injury: “It was great to end and start the year with a win. Too bad about the crick when we were wrapping up the game. I have to take a 48 hour rest and have some studies done on the injury. I’ll keep you posted. Thanks for the support!”

Meanwhile, Patrick Vieira ‏(@OfficialVieira) reserves special praise for David Silva: “@21LVA not only a fantastic player but a humble person who is a great example for the young players.”

Stoke goalkeeper Asmir Begovic (@asmir1) admits Tony Pulis’ men weren’t at the races: “Bad day at the office for us today! We will be better next game. On to the next one. Great support as always! #potternation #BeastMode”

Potters striker Michael Owen ‏(@themichaelowen) puts the loss into context: “Tough game today and not many teams get anything away at Man City. Shame our 10 game unbeaten run in the Premier League is over. #Stoke”

United defender Rio Ferdinand ‏(@rioferdy5) is happy to not concede any goals – for a change: “Great win today, another clean sheet (which was needed)!! Our fans were brilliant 2day…loud as!! Great songs!! #solid”

Swansea midfielder Wayne Routledge (‏@WayneRoutledge) agrees with his team-mate’s tweet: “X2 ‘@DannyGraham10: Gutted we never won the game today … On to the next one #FACup have a good evening people.’”

Former Villa legend George Boateng (‏@george1boateng) reckons Graham has been watching his great strikes from the past: “Great goal by @DannyGraham10 for the equaliser against the Villa and I think you watched me well in training. Lol.”

Dion Dublin (‏@DionDublinsDube) is sickened to see his old club drop points in a 2-2 draw: “Nooooooo! I thought Villa may have hung on to a win. #gutted”

Celebrity Arsenal fan Piers Morgan (‏@piersmorgan) is worried for Arsenal in upcoming games after a 1-1 draw at Southampton: “If we play like this in next two league games v Man City and Chelsea, we’ll get hammered. Poor, passion-devoid performance. #Arsenal”

Former Bolton midfielder Fabrice Muamba (‏@fmuamba) doesn’t think the current crop of Arsenal players are good enough: “I feel for Arsenal fans. Some of those player are just not good enough to play for Arsenal, take nothing away from the SFC they been good!”
