Sir Alex Ferguson is convinced that Tottenham Hotspur are serious contenders for a top-four finish this season ahead of Manchester United’s trip to White Hart Lane.

The Red Devils travel to the capital on Sunday looking to keep their seven-point lead at the top of the Premier League table intact with a victory against André Villas-Boas’s men.

Ferguson has been impressed with the impact the Portuguese coach has had in north London since he took over from Harry Redknapp last summer.

And the Manchester United boss has no doubts that Spurs will be pushing for Champions League qualification come the end of the season.

“I think Spurs have done well this season,” said Ferguson. “I’ve watched quite a few of their games and their form has been consistent.

“They’re in good form and I think they’ll challenge for the top four.

“Villas-Boas has Spurs in the way he wants them and I think there are signs they’re playing how he wants them to play. That’s what a coach wants to do – get his philosophy across.”
