Arsenal have plenty of character, insists Arsene Wenger
Arsene Wenger insists Arsenal's 1-0 win at Sunderland on Saturday shows the Gunners have "plenty" of character
Arsene Wenger insists Arsenal’s win at Sunderland shows that the Gunners have “plenty” of character as the race for a top-four finish hots up.
Saturday’s 1-0 win at the Stadium of Light ensured that the north Londoners kept pace with fourth-placed Tottenham Hotspur, who are currently four points ahead of their arch-rivals.
Wenger was delighted with the battling spirit shown by his side after Arsenal were reduced to 10 men in the second half following Carl Jenkinson’s dismissal.
And the Frenchman believes the Gunners have silenced some of the critics who had questioned his side’s character during the course of the season.
“I’m pleased with the three points, but with the way we played as well,” Wenger told Arsenal Player.
“We had moments of brilliance today. When we needed to defend, we could see that we were up for it. We did fight, we did play, and we got the three points.
“The only negative point of today’s game is that we got a player sent off. We didn’t take our chances. We could have scored six or seven. Apart from that, it was a fantastic game.
“Our character was questioned many times. You have seen today that we have plenty. I liked the last 20 minutes where we were pushed back. We headed every single ball. We tried like mad and that’s fantastic to see.
“Sometimes you have to just dig in and some players played in uncomfortable positions. When we have the desire to win, it helps a lot.”
