Kenny Dalglish believes Jack Wilshere can cope with the “adulation” after the Arsenal midfielder starred in England’s 2-1 victory over Brazil on Wednesday.

The 21-year-old impressed alongside Three Lions captain Steven Gerrard and Manchester United youngster Tom Cleverley in Roy Hodgson’s midfield at Wembley, with the Gunners star playing a part in Wayne Rooney’s opener.

Wilshere, who has six England caps, has been compared to Three Lions legend Paul Gascoigne over the past week, but former Liverpool manager Dalglish reckons supporters shouldn’t get carried away, just yet.

“Some people are already worrying about the praise that is being lavished on Jack Wilshere,” Dalglish told the Mirror.

“Nobody wants him to be put on a pedestal and then for that pedestal to be kicked away.

“But if he is being heralded as an exceptional footballer, it is inevitable that people are going to talk about him.

“And from what I understand of his character, I don’t think he will have a problem coping with the adulation.

“I’m not interested in getting into any comparisons between Wilshere and Paul Gascoigne.

“Those comparisons are pointless and irrelevant. Everybody has different influences and characteristics. They should be treated as individuals.

“I would go easy with the praise. Wilshere is a young lad who is coming back from a long spell out with injury.

“But I have been an admirer of his for quite some time and I do believe he is a young player who can take England forward.”
