Wenger hails ‘top class’ Cazorla as Arsenal beat Sunderland
Arsene Wenger reserves special praise for Santi Cazorla after the playmaker's goal gives Arsenal a 1-0 victory at Sunderland
Arsene Wenger reserved special praise for Santi Cazorla after the playmaker’s goal gave 10-man Arsenal a 1-0 victory at Sunderland on Saturday.
Cazorla drilled home a low shot in the 36th minute to net his ninth goal of the season for the north Londoners, before the Gunners were forced to hold firm after Carl Jenkinson was sent off in the second half.
The 28-year-old Spaniard has been one of Arsenal’s standout performers this season since moving to north London from Malaga in the summer.
And Gunners boss Wenger was again full of praise for the “outstanding” midfielder following Saturday’s win, which kept his side in the chase for a fourth-place finish.
“[Cazorla was] top, top class,” said Wenger. “When you think that this guy is not a regular in the Spanish national team, it shows you how good they are. I think he had an outstanding performance today.”
Wenger added: “We were under pressure to win today. We could not afford to drop points, I said that after the Chelsea game. We are in a situation where we cannot drop points anymore. No matter where we play, we need the three points.”
