Aston Villa 2 West Ham 1: Paul Lambert hails his side's "huge win" against the Hammers at Villa Park
Paul Lambert hailed Aston Villa’s huge win after the Birmingham side moved clear of the bottom three courtesy of a narrow victory over West Ham United.
Prolific Belgium international Christian Benteke broke the deadlock from the penalty spot before Charles N’Zogbia doubled the home side’s advantage with a superb free-kick.
Villa’s Ashley Westwood scored a late own goal but it did not deny Lambert’s men their first home win in nine league games, ending a run of four successive league defeats at Villa Park.
“We deserve a lot of credit for what we have done today,” said Lambert.
“I think it will be huge for us. We’ve taken a lot of knocks but football is a funny game and we are only three points behind Newcastle now.
“We know what we have got to do and there’s 12 games to go and every game is really tough. But that was a huge win for us, especially with the results for the teams around us yesterday.”
Meanwhile, Hammers manager Sam Allardyce criticised his side for failing to beat under-peforming Villa after dominating much of the match.
“We have put ourselves in a poor position and gone 2-0 down but we created the chances to make it 2-2 at least. But it was more down to great goalkeeping as we hit the target but he has made some really good saves,” said Allardyce.
“We can’t play any better than we did and can’t dominate any more than we did but if we had put the ball in the net then it would’ve been a very different situation.
“This was a fantastic opportunity to pick up points and we should’ve done so.”
