He’s to blame! Celtic’s Kris Commons blames Efe Ambrose for Juve disaster
Celtic midfielder Kris Commons says his team-mate Efe Ambrose must accept the blame for their 3-0 loss to Juventus on Tuesday
Kris Commons has launched a scathing attack on team-mate Efe Ambrose after Juventus were 3-0 winners at Celtic in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie.
The Nigeria international was restored to Celtic’s starting line-up for the clash against the Serie A champions despite featuring in the Africa Cup of Nations final on Sunday.
The 24-year-old was at fault for Alessandro Matri’s opening goal before his misplaced pass was intercepted as Mirko Vucinic added a third for the visitors.
To compound a miserable night for the centre-half, he also missed Celtic’s best chance to beat Juve goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon in the 62nd minute, and Commons was left unimpressed by the African’s performance.
“Look, the manager picked him. The manager pulled him to one side and asked him if he was feeling okay. He said he was feeling brilliant.
“If he wasn’t feeling okay then he should have said so.
“If he felt good then he should have put in a better performance.”
Commons added: “It was just very sloppy individual mistakes – something you’d probably get away with on a playground, not in the last 16 of the Champions League.
“There are certain individuals who let the team down.
“Hopefully this is just a one-off. The back four have made errors which have probably cost us the tie. But it’s partly down to them why we’re here in the first place.
“It’s just a bitter one to swallow.”
Celtic will travel to Juventus on 6 March looking to overturn the three-goal deficit from Parkhead.
