Watching the Champions League was motivation for Chelsea, says Terry

Chelsea captain John Terry says that watching the Champions League this week helped motivate the Blues ahead Sparta clash

John Terry admitted that watching Europe’s top clubs battle it out in the Champions League earlier this week has just made him more determined to help Chelsea win the Europa League this season.

The Blues were parachuted down into Europe’s second-tier club competition after failing to navigate their way out of the Champions League group stage before Christmas.

Eden Hazard’s late equaliser against Sparta Prague gave the Blues a 2-1 aggregate victory at Stamford Bridge and set up a last-16 clash with Steaua Bucharest.

And Terry insists that the west Londoners need no more motivation ahead of that clash.

“I was disappointed with the way we started but delighted to go through,” said Terry. “We left it as late as we could and sometimes that’s the best way but it wasn’t our best performance. We’re in the next round though and we’re happy with that.

“Qualification was an absolute must. We’re disappointed to be out of the Champions League and watching it on Tuesday and Wednesday night was enough motivation for us to kick on in this one, we’re in it to win it and nothing changes from that.

“After that we’d have a chance with the Super Cup, so still some big competitions to play for.”

Chelsea travel to Manchester City in the Premier League on Sunday.
