Chelsea players are fully behind my ideas, insists Rafael Benítez
Chelsea manager Rafael Benítez insists his squad are fully behind him ahead of their FA Cup fifth-round clash against Middlesbrough
Rafael Benítez insists the Chelsea squad are “fully behind” his ideas ahead of their FA Cup fifth-round clash against Middlesbrough on Wednesday night.
The Blues boss was reported to have been involved in a heated meeting with his squad on their return to training following Sunday’s 2-0 loss at Manchester City.
Tottenham Hotspur leapfrogged the Champions League winners into third place after a dramatic 3-2 win at Upton Park on Monday, while Arsenal are now just two points behind the Blues in fifth.
But despite the recent reports of disharmony, Benítez is adamant that he has the players’ support and pointed to victories over Aston Villa and Stoke City as evidence that his methods are coming to fruition.
“I guarantee you that the players know what we are trying to do and they believe in what we are trying to do. I know that 100 per cent,” said Benítez.
“Everyone has their own ideas but the players are fully behind my ideas.
“We have done really well in some games, not as well in other games.
“We have to take positive things from each one. I think they grasped what I was trying to tell them against Aston Villa, against Nordsjaelland, and also against Stoke.”
Chelsea had chances to score against Roberto Mancini’s side, including Frank Lampard’s penalty miss at 0-0, before Yaya Toure and Carlos Tevez sealed a win for the home side.
However, Benítez insisted that he was satisfied with Chelsea’s “competitive” performance against the defending Premier League champions.
“We played against a very good team,” added Benítez.
“Not many teams go to City and have three chances to win the game. I am happy that the team was competitive against City.”
