Rafael Benítez insists that he is not concerned by Fernando Torres’ lack of goals in recent weeks and is backing the Chelsea striker to start finding the net regularly again.

Torres is yet to score a league goal for his club this year, with his last top-flight strike coming in the 8-0 thrashing of Aston Villa before Christmas.

The Spaniard, who netted the equaliser at Brentford in the FA Cup at the end of January, has struggled to find consistent form in front of goal since his £50m move to Stamford Bridge from Liverpool back in January 2011.

But Benítez, who coached the 28-year-old while the pair were at Liverpool, is expecting the forward to embark on a goal-scoring run as the season reaches its climax.

“The perception is that Fernando hasn’t scored goals, but he already has 15,” said the Chelsea interim boss ahead of his side’s Europa League last-32 clash at Sparta Prague on Thursday.

“He was scoring at the beginning of the season and then again when I just arrived.

“He hasn’t scored for a couple of games but he was playing as a lone striker for a long time.

“I said when we signed Demba Ba it would be good for him because if you rest one of them they can be fit for the next game, but I think he will start scoring goals again.”
