Arsenal were left with the daunting task of overturning a two-goal deficit in Germany after Bayern Munich were comfortable 3-1 winners at The Emirates in the Champions League first-leg last-16 tie.

Germany internationals Toni Kroos and Thomas Mueller struck early in the first half to put the visitors in control, and although Lukas Podolski did manage to net against his former club, Mario Mandzukic restored Bayern’s two-goal cushion in the 77th minute.

Here is the best of the Twitter reaction from the professionals, both past and present, after a miserable night for the north London side.

Former England cricket captain Michael Vaughan ‏(@MichaelVaughan) reckons the pre-match signs are ominous: “Fact… Arsenal haven’t got close to winning anything whilst Arsene has been wearing that stupid coat….”

Unsurprisingly, Arsenal fan Piers Morgan (‏@piersmorgan) launches his latest anti-Aaron Ramsey tirade after Kroos’ strike: “Took Ramsey eight minutes to cock it up. Quite good by his standards. #Arsenal”

Swansea striker Wayne Routledge (‏@WayneRoutledge) is in awe of the midfielder’s technique for the goal: “That technique was outrageous! #Kroos”

Chelsea midfielder Jody Morris (‏@morriskid) breaks down what he felt went wrong for Bayern’s second goal: “What a team Bayern are to watch!!! If that’s zonal marking, Ramsay has to do better..if man-marking, Mertesacker has to do better.”

Stoke striker Michael Owen (@themichaelowen) fears for the Gunners: “Was just tweeting that I fear for Arsenal here. Then Munich go and score. Let’s hope this doesn’t get any worse.”

England legend Gary Lineker (‏@GaryLineker) is very concerned: “Hmmm this could get embarrassing for Arsenal.”

Arsenal midfielder Emmanuel Frimpong ‏(@IAMFRIMPONG26) isn’t enjoying the Twitter with his side losing: “Leaveit!!”

Comedian and Gunners fan Jack Whitehall (‏@jackwhitehall) is critical of Arsenal’s passing: “That German that keeps threading the ball to the feet of the Bayern strikers is amazing. Oh wait that’s Mertasacker. Oh dear.”

Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville ‏(@GNev2) tells Morgan to get behind his side: “@piersmorgan you’re depressing me and I don’t support Arsenal! Be thankful you support a club with morals and history! It’s just a moment in time.”

Marseille midfielder Joey Barton (‏@Joey7Barton) reckons the Gunners could do with a bit more steel – perhaps eyeing a move to The Emirates: “Arsenal of old would of gotten right amongst Bayern tonight. This team just doesn’t have the nastiness needed to win things.”

Liverpool defender Glen Johnson ‏(@glen_johnson) is having a dejà vu moment after Podolski’s goal: “How many times does that happen..?! Not a corner then…. #Goal”

Southampton midfielder Matt Le Tissier (‏@mattletiss7) criticises the fifth official following the goal: “Bayern mun must be gutted! Never a corner in first place, surely the fifth official can see it’s a goal kick #pointlessofficials game on!”

Saints defender Luke Shaw (‏@Luke_shaw3) reckons Arsenal can restore parity: “I can see a comeback now!!”

Former Liverpool defender Neil Ruddock (‏@RealRazor) asks his mate Paul Merson for his prediction after Olivier Giroud comes close: “Arsenal getting closer, can they do it Merse??”

Morris (‏@morriskid) reckons Arsenal could lose Wilshere if their silverware drought continues: “Jack Wilshere will be hard to keep hold of if Arsenal don’t start challenging..because in his form of late all the top teams will pounce!!!”
