Glen Johnson believes Liverpool’s new signing Daniel Sturridge will prove a success at the club, backing the striker to “petrify” opponents.

The 23-year-old has scored three goals in five appearances for the Reds after completing a £12m switch to Anfield from Chelsea last month.

Sturridge has made an instant impact, scoring on his debut and linking up impressively with strike partner Luis Suárez.

And Johnson is confident the England international will be an Anfield hit, with the forward facing his former club as Liverpool take on Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday.

“Danny Sturridge has settled in well and I think he’ll do some fantastic things here at the club,” said Johnson.

“He will be a fantastic signing. He will petrify defenders because he’s so sharp, quick and unpredictable at times.

“He will always occupy at least two defenders, which gives the rest of us opportunities to make runs around him.

“He will be a great asset for us. I know how Danny felt at City and Chelsea. Every player wants to play in every game.

“I’m sure Danny left Chelsea to get games and show what he can do because he’s a fantastic player.

“It’s a great challenge to go up against Danny and Luis Suárez in training. I can really see the partnership being very good for us.

“We’ve already seen that, but it’s still early days and it’s going to improve over time as well. It’s looking bright between them.”
