Player of the Year! Liverpool’s Luis Suarez ‘deserves’ to win accolade
Lucas Leiva says his Liverpool team-mate Luis Suárez "deserves" to win the Player of the Year award after an impressive season
Lucas Leiva believes that Luis Suárez “deserves” to win the PFA Players’ Player of the Year award for his impressive contribution at Liverpool this season.
The 26-year-old Uruguayan has been in fine form for Brendan Rodgers’ men this term and is currently second in the Premier League goal-scoring charts with 18 strikes to his name.
Suárez, who has scored 26 goals in all competitions for the Reds this season, looks set to come up against stiff competition from Robin van Persie and Gareth Bale for this year’s prize.
But Liverpool midfielder Leiva believes his Anfield team-mate deserves the crown because of his importance to the Merseyside club.
“Luis will certainly be challenging for that award,” the Brazilian told the Liverpool Echo.
“It has been such an amazing season for him. He has been scoring a lot of goals and showing everyone all the qualities he has.
“I just hope he wins because I think he deserves it after everything he has done this season.
“I think it’s going to be between Luis, Van Persie and Bale. All three have performed really well and have scored a lot of goals.
“But we hope Luis has got the luck to win it. He has been so important for us and is a special player. It’s just so good to have him in our team.
“We just hope he can continue playing at this level and scores many more goals before the end of the season.”
