Liverpool transfers: It’s flattering to be linked with top clubs – McCarthy
Liverpool transfers: Wigan Athletic midfielder James McCarthy says he is flattered by reported interest from a number of big clubs
James McCarthy says that he is flattered by reported interest from a number of top Premier League clubs, including Arsenal, Everton and Liverpool.
The Wigan Athletic star has impressed for Roberto Martínez’s side this season, scoring two goals in 25 Premier League appearances.
The 22-year-old is also establishing himself as a mainstay of Giovanni Trapattoni’s Republic of Ireland squad, prompting talk of McCarthy securing a move to a big top-flight club.
However, the midfielder, who moved to the DW Stadium in 2009, is ignoring the speculation and is focusing on helping Wigan remain in the Premier League, with Martínez’s men currently in 18th place
“Obviously, it’s good to see your name linked with big clubs, certain clubs, it’s always nice but I am still a Wigan player and I will keep playing for Wigan until the end of the season,” said McCarthy.
“I have been linked with clubs here and there but I will keep working hard and see what the end of the season brings.”
In January, Martínez said that would not stop McCarthy taking the next step and securing a big-money move should an offer materialise in the future.
“James McCarthy’s got the potential to play anywhere in the world and whenever he’s ready we’ll never stop him,” Martínez told Wigan Evening Post.
“But James McCarthy is at a very good club now and we want top players to stay here for as long as we can.”
“At 22 to have the tactical awareness that he has and to be so consistent week in, week out…
“James knows he needs another period of improvement, but from a technical point of view he can play in any team in the world and he will do one day.
“We just enjoy seeing him grow and seeing him enjoy his football and being an important player for us and at international level.”
