Mauricio Pochettino has confirmed he was interested in bringing Liverpool midfielder Philippe Coutinho to Southampton.

The 20-year-old penned a long-term contract at Liverpool after completing a £8.5m switch to Anfield from Internazionale in January.

Pochettino, who replaced Nigel Adkins in December, signed Coutinho on loan from the San Siro outfit for the second half of Espanyol’s 2011-12 campaign.

The Brazil international scored five goals in 16 appearances under Pochettino before returning to Italy, while the Spaniard was sacked last year.

“I often spoken with him in the last weeks of January. I had him last year at Espanyol, I know him well, but eventually he went to Liverpool.”
