Patience is a virtue! Alonso urges Liverpool fans to back Rodgers
Real Madrid midfielder Xabi Alonso says Liverpool supporters must be patient as Brendan Rodgers attempts to rebuild the club
Xabi Alonso says he still feels “very attached” to Liverpool and has urged Reds supporters to be patient as Brendan Rodgers attempts to reverse the club’s ailing fortunes.
The Spain international completed a £24m move to Real Madrid from the Reds in August 2009, ending a five-year spell at the Merseyside outfit.
Alonso was a key part of the club’s Champions League triumph in 2005, scoring in the second half against AC Milan and also winning the FA Cup with the Merseysiders.
The 30-year-old is now an integral member of Jose Mourinho’s Madrid side, but Alonso insists he still follows Liverpool closely.
“With Brendan, Liverpool are building a project,” Alonso told BBC Sport.
“They need to be patient. We all want to see Liverpool fighting for the Champions League places.
“I still follow the Premier League and I still feel very attached to Liverpool and I follow them. I consider myself a Liverpool fan.”
Alonso scored 19 goals in 210 appearances for Liverpool after completing a £10.75m move to Anfield from Real Sociedad in 2004.
