Roberto Mancini has issued his backing for Joe Hart, insisting that he trusts the Manchester City goalkeeper “100 per cent” despite the Italian’s recent criticism of the England international.

Mancini was quoted as saying that Hart has “not been good enough” and has “made too many mistakes” this season after the Citizens suffered a surprise 3-1 defeat by Southampton earlier this month, when the goalkeeper was at fault for Steven Davis’s goal.

But the City manager has come out in support for the 25-year-old shot-stopper ahead of the defending champions’ clash with Chelsea on Sunday and says he has faith in him.

Mancini said: “I love Joe. Two years ago, when no one wanted him in goal instead of Shay [Given], I put him in because I trusted him and was sure he was a good goalkeeper.

“Sometimes it’s difficult for a goalkeeper, he can do a mistake and if they do they can let in a goal but we trust Joe 100 per cent.”
