Man City’s Sergio Aguero confident ahead of crunch Chelsea clash
Sergio Aguero says Manchester City will draw confidence from their FA Cup success ahead of their vital Chelsea clash
Sergio Aguero believes Manchester City’s FA Cup victory over Leeds United will provide the defending champions with some much-needed confidence ahead of their crunch Chelsea clash next weekend.
Roberto Mancini’s side booked their place in the quarter-finals courtesy of an emphatic 4-0 win against the Championship side at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday.
City are 12 points behind league leaders Manchester United following a 3-1 loss at Southampton in their last top-flight outing, and Aguero has warned that there can be no more slip-ups if they want to retain their crown.
“This helped us to do things well and give us confidence for the Chelsea game. It will be a good match, difficult, but obviously we need to go out and win,” Aguero told City’s website.
“I think against Southampton none of us played well and it was a bad day for us all – an error which we hope not to repeat.
“We will try not to lose any more points in the league so we can keep all three points. I think we’ve played well and reached the next round. We need to continue like this.”
Aguero’s season has been disrupted by niggling injuries after an electric first campaign in England.
So the Argentina international, who joined City in a £38m deal in 2011, was delighted to score twice against Leeds in an impressive all-round Citizens performance.
“The whole team played well though,” he added. “The important thing was to win and we did. So now we will have a bit of calm and can concentrate on the Chelsea game.
“Yes, they were two good goals but the most important thing was they helped us to win. So I’m happy for the goals and for the win.
“I really like this cup, played as a single leg. Obviously if we maintain our concentration, I think we have a team that can reach the final.”
